"The best terroirs The Fontanafredda estate has the largest contiguous vineyard in the Langhe region, with over 100 hectares of land forming a natural amphitheater that extends to the highly prized terroirs of Serralunga d'Alba, Barolo and Diano d'Alba. This hilly and well-oriented land benefits from warm days and cool nights that ensure a long and slow ripening. The wines produced here are of great elegance, with highly nuanced aromas, a powerful structure and a fine tannic structure. Leader in responsible cultivation In 2016, Fontanafredda began the conversion of the entire estate to organic farming. By 2019, it will be the largest certified organic producer in the Piedmont. The winery has reduced its water consumption by more than 20% in recent years by reusing wastewater to irrigate green spaces around the winery and installing a phytodepuration plant. A modern traditionalist Danilo Drocco believes in combining classic and modern aging techniques for his Barolo. The wines spend a year in small French oak barrels before being transferred to larger, older barrels for a second year. According to Drocco, the barrels intensify the fruit, while the large barrels allow for control of the tannic structure and expression of the oak."
